Evotech CAE Ltd gave a presentation on a recent development project at the first NAFEMS European Simulation-Based Optimisation Conference in Manchester, UK earlier this month. The project received support from partner companies Mirada Pro and MSC Software.

The paper entitled ‘Structural Optimisation for Mass Customisation of High-Performance Bicycle Components, using Metallic Additive Manufacture (DMLS)‘ described how ‘mass customisation’ techniques can offer bespoke components for the high-end bicycle market, based on individual assessment of rider ergonomics, power requirements and targeted product durability.

This was proposed through a robust, repeatable and time-efficient design process, focused on optimisation of a combination of structural and manufacturing parameters, whilst respecting specific design constraints, such as strength, stiffness and fatigue life.
